India's Manpower: Are We Really Competitive With the World?

“As India, the world’s largest democracy, celebrated its 80th Independence Day, it is time to look beyond celebration and reflect: Are we, as a nation, truly ready to compete with the world?”

India celebrated its 80th Independence Day, we have every reason to feel proud of our achievements. We have completed nearly eight decades as an independent nation. We have achieved remarkable progress in science, technology, space, medicine, infrastructure and many other fields.

But Independence Day should not be only a day for celebration. It should also be a day for self-examination.

We have one of the greatest human resources in the world. India has enormous manpower, intellectual ability, natural resources and a long history of knowledge. But a fundamental question remains:

Are we really converting our population strength into productive strength?

India has one of the world’s largest populations. But does a large population automatically become an economic strength? Or does it become a strength only when people are educated, skilled, healthy, disciplined, innovative and willing to compete?

Population power or productive power?

The world is becoming increasingly competitive. Countries with much smaller populations are producing advanced machinery, agricultural technologies, electronics, automobiles, medical equipment and high-value products for the entire world.

Then where do we stand? Are we unable to compete because our country does not provide a favourable environment?

Or are we sometimes not prepared enough to compete?

This is not a question against any particular government, political party or generation. It is a question for all of us.

In many sectors, we still depend heavily on technologies, machinery and intellectual property developed elsewhere. We import products that we could potentially manufacture ourselves. We use technologies developed by others and sometimes take pride merely in operating them.

But where are our own globally dominant innovations? Why are we not producing more technologies that the rest of the world wants to buy from us?

India was never poor in intelligence:

This situation cannot be explained by saying that Indians lack intelligence.Our history tells a different story.

India has produced great mathematicians, scientists, engineers, doctors, philosophers and scholars. Our intellectual tradition is thousands of years old.

Even in modern India, personalities such as Sir M. Visvesvaraya demonstrated extraordinary engineering ability, discipline, vision and commitment to national development. The question is therefore not whether Indians are capable.

The question is:

What happened to our culture of excellence, discipline, innovation and workmanship?

Why did the generation that produced great builders, engineers and thinkers not produce enough successors of the same global impact?

Is it because opportunities are insufficient?

Is our education system failing to encourage original thinking?

Are we becoming too comfortable with depending on others?

Or have we slowly developed an attitude of “Chalta Hai”—that something is acceptable even when it is not done properly?

Hard work creates wealth; higher earnings strengthen the nation.

Education: Are we studying for knowledge or marks?

One of the biggest questions concerns education.For many students, education has gradually become a race for marks, certificates and employment rather than a search for knowledge.

A student may obtain a degree but still lack practical knowledge.A graduate may know theories but struggle to solve real-world problems.

We should ask ourselves:

Are we producing degree holders or problem solvers? A generation that learns only to pass examinations may not automatically become a generation of innovators.

Even basic habits tell us something. The handwriting of many young people is becoming poorer because writing by hand is increasingly replaced by keyboards and mobile phones. More importantly, sometimes the decline is not merely in handwriting—it is in patience, attention, workmanship and the willingness to complete a task properly.

Our goal should not be to criticise today’s youth. Instead, we should ask whether our education, family environment and social priorities are preparing them for the competitive world that awaits them.

Our manpower must also be physically strong:

Human resource is not only about degrees and intelligence.A productive workforce also needs health, stamina, discipline and physical fitness.

Modern lifestyles have changed dramatically. Many young people spend long hours sitting, using mobile phones and computers, while physical activity has declined.

A country cannot build a powerful productive economy only with certificates.We need people who can think, work, create, operate machinery, solve problems, work with discipline and maintain physical and mental stamina.

Healthy manpower is productive manpower.

Why do so many Indians succeed abroad?

There is an interesting contradiction.Indians working abroad have demonstrated that they can perform extremely well in competitive environments. Indian professionals are found across the world in technology, medicine, engineering, management, research and many other fields.

Then why does the same talent sometimes perform differently inside the country? This raises another important question:

Is the problem with our people—or with the environment in which our people work?

Perhaps the answer is not one or the other. We may need better institutions, better infrastructure, better incentives, stronger accountability, better education and greater respect for skilled work. At the same time, individuals must also accept responsibility for quality, punctuality, discipline and continuous learning.

Now let us look at  our agriculture sector:

This question becomes even more important when we examine Indian agriculture.Are we truly competitive with world agriculture?

India produces enormous quantities of agricultural commodities. We have excellent farmers, scientists and agricultural institutions.

Yet we still face problems with quality, consistency, post-harvest handling, food safety, residues, grading, packaging and international market standards.

At times, agricultural consignments face rejection or restrictions in foreign markets because they do not meet required standards.

We spend large amounts of public money on agricultural research, universities, extension programmes, subsidies, irrigation and other support systems.

But we must ask:What is the final outcome of all this investment?

Are farmers becoming globally competitive?

Are our yields consistently competitive?

Are our production costs competitive?

Are our agricultural products meeting the highest international quality standards?

Are our technologies reaching ordinary farmers quickly enough?

Look at China’s agricultural transformation:

China provides an important example—not because everything in China should be copied, but because it demonstrates what can happen when technology, manufacturing and agriculture develop together.

Modern agricultural machinery, precision agriculture, protected cultivation, irrigation systems, processing technologies and large-scale production systems have transformed agricultural productivity in many parts of the world.

We should ask ourselves a simple question:

If countries such as China had not developed and manufactured so many machines and technologies, could Indian farmers afford to use them at today’s scale?

Even when we purchase foreign machinery, the question should be:Why are we not manufacturing more of these technologies ourselves?

Research papers are valuable. Universities are valuable. Scientific conferences are valuable. But research ultimately has to move from paper to product, laboratory to field and knowledge to productivity.

The problem of fragmented agricultural land:

Indian agriculture has another structural challenge: the fragmentation of landholdings. After Independence, India introduced land reforms with important social objectives. These included abolition of “land lord system systems”, tenancy reforms, land ceilings and redistribution of surplus land. The broad idea was to provide greater security and ownership to cultivators and reduce extreme concentration of land.

These reforms were historically important for social justice. But today, we must also ask a different question:

Is the present structure of agricultural holdings sufficient for the technological and commercial agriculture of the future? Small and fragmented holdings can make mechanisation, irrigation infrastructure, scientific management, storage, processing and export-oriented production more difficult and expensive.

However, the answer does not necessarily have to be taking land away from small farmers. There may be better alternatives.

Farmers can retain ownership while creating farmer producer organisations, cooperative farming systems, machinery-sharing systems, contract arrangements, land leasing frameworks and professionally managed agricultural enterprises.

The objective should be:Small ownership need not mean small-scale thinking.Individual farm or professionally managed agricultural enterprise?

Consider two models.

An individual farmer may cultivate a small area using traditional methods, sell the produce locally and depend heavily on the local market.

A professionally managed agricultural enterprise can potentially combine land, technology, machinery, irrigation, skilled labour, scientific management, grading, processing, storage and marketing.

Such an enterprise may have greater capacity to produce uniform quality and connect directly with larger markets.

But this does not mean that every farmer must become a labourer for a company.A better future could allow different roles.A person may be a landowner, farmer, machinery operator, technician, manager, scientist, agronomist, accountant, processor or entrepreneur.

The agricultural economy should create opportunities for all these skills.The important thing is to move from subsistence-oriented farming to professionally managed, technology-driven and market-oriented agriculture.

We must change the meaning of dignity:

In India, owning agricultural land is often associated with prestige. There is nothing wrong with loving land. Land is our basic productive asset. But should owning two acres automatically be considered more respectable than becoming a skilled agricultural engineer, machinery operator, scientist or farm manager?

Perhaps we need to change our thinking.If large, professionally managed agricultural enterprises create thousands of skilled jobs, export products and increase productivity, then they can become an important part of the rural economy.A young person who does not own land should not feel that he has no future in agriculture.

He should be able to say: “I may not own the land, but I can build my career, and get sufficient income in agriculture.”

Where should the farmer stand?:

This is where the future becomes interesting.Imagine an agricultural company employing people according to their skills.

One person could work as a field labourer.

Another could operate machinery.

Another could manage irrigation.

Another could work as an agronomist.

Another could handle pest and disease management.

Another could work in soil testing.

Another could manage post-harvest processing.

Another could work in export marketing.

Someone with higher qualifications could become a farm scientist or manager.

In such a system, education becomes directly connected with agriculture.

A farmer’s child would not necessarily have to leave agriculture to find a respectable career.

Agriculture itself could become an industry of knowledge, technology and professional employment.

Government support cannot continue to be the only answer:

India has implemented numerous welfare programmes, subsidies, reservations and support schemes for different sections of society.

Such support can be necessary during periods of vulnerability.

But the ultimate objective of any welfare system should be self-reliance and productive participation.

How long can a country continue to expand support without simultaneously expanding productivity?

The real strength of a nation comes when people are able to create more value than they consume.

Therefore, government support should increasingly help people become:skilled, productive, innovative, entrepreneurial and self-reliant.

Civil servants and elected representatives have a greater responsibility:

Government employees are paid from public money.That does not make them servants in a negative sense. It gives them a public responsibility.

Every rupee spent by government ultimately comes from the economic activity and tax contribution of citizens.

Therefore, public administration must be efficient, transparent and accountable.

Likewise, elected representatives carry an even greater responsibility.

They are not merely representatives of political parties.

They are representatives of citizens.

Their success should ultimately be measured by better education, better health, productive employment, infrastructure, innovation, agricultural competitiveness and quality of life.

The real Independence Day question:

After nearly eight decades of Independence, perhaps we should ask ourselves a new question.

We have political freedom.

But are we economically and technologically independent enough?

We have manpower. But are we converting it into productive power?

We have universities.But are we producing enough world-changing innovations?

We have farmers. But are we producing agriculture that can compete with the best in the world?

We have scientists.But are their discoveries reaching ordinary people quickly enough?

We have young people.But are we giving them knowledge, skills, health, discipline and opportunities?

We have enormous potential.But are we using it fully?

When will India truly shine in the world?

The answer cannot come from one government, one political party, one scientist or one generation.It must come from a change in our collective mindset.

We must respect skilled work.

We must reward excellence.

We must encourage innovation.

We must accept accountability.

We must improve physical fitness.

We must connect education with practical knowledge.

We must make agriculture more scientific and professionally managed.

We must encourage manufacturing instead of depending excessively on imports.

We must transform research into products and technologies.

And most importantly, we must stop asking only:

“What can the country give me?”

We should also begin asking:“What can I produce? What can I create? What problem can I solve? What value can I add to my country?”

India does not lack people.

India does not lack intelligence.

India does not lack resources.

Perhaps what we need most is to transform our enormous population strength into productive strength.

One day, India will have to compete with every nation—not merely in population, but in quality, productivity, innovation, efficiency and excellence.

The question is not whether India can do it.

The question is: When will we decide that we must?

On this Independence Day, perhaps this is the question every Indian should ask himself.
